Gift of Vojta Náprstek who obtained it (with other items) from Pavel Durdík, a Czech medical practitioner who worked for the Dutch colonial army. Besides his exhausting professional work, he was interested in the
life of the native people and he collected the items of everyday use. His ethnological interests and activities were initiated by Vojta Náprstek, founder of the Náprstek Museum.

Why this is a masterpiece:
Rounded shield was made of rattan and covered with black (obverse part) and red (reverse part) cotton fabric. It is decorated with metal stars (only the middle star keeps six rays, the other ones have only five rays to keep enough room around the middle star and to create a ring). The composition is very balanced and the golden brass stars on the black background creates an attractive contrast. The shield was used for self-defence in local fights. It may also have been used in the case of war with the Dutch army but only in hand to hand fights. It could not be used as protection against firearms. Maybe that was the reason it was exchanged for alcohol. The Acehnese made all arms and armours themselves. Although the item was well preserved it was exchanged for alcohol – a rather nonstandard exchange in Muslim society.
History of the Object:
The shield was exchanged by Pavel Durdík with an Acehnese for alcohol.
Janganlah ditangisi bila artefak sejarah kita dimiliki Kolektor dan Museum ASING, mungkin itu dijarah saat masa penjajahan atau dijual orang kita sendiri atau bahkan anak keturunan yang sedang membutuhkan uang.
