Why this is a masterpiece:
A Majapahit kris. Special because it was found in the central stupa of the Borobudur. By dr Pieter ter Keurs, Curator Insular Southeast Asian Collections, Leiden.
History of the Object:
A Majapahit kris is a small kris with the hilt and the blade made in one piece. The name Majapahit kris does not automatically mean that the kris originates from the Majapahit empire (East Java 15th and 16th century). Some are older and most of them are from a later date. This kris adds to the mysteries around the Borobudur. It was found in the Central stupa of the Buddhist monument which was built in the 8th century. The kris dates from the 15th century A kris is a dagger (with two sharp sides) with many ritual and symbolic levels of meaning. A kris is supposed to be able to overpower people by making them sick and even kill them. A kris can also protect people (e.g., from being harassed by evil spirits) or a house (e.g., from being burnt down by a fire).
